Anemia Center

The Medical Group at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall is dedicated to providing exceptional care for patients with anemia. Our Anemia Center, located within our Newburgh Office location on Route 300, helps to manage pregnant patients with iron deficiency, patients preparing for elective surgery,  patients with chronic anemia and much more. Not all patients need to be seen by a hepatologist. Our Physicians have been trained by local hepatologists to get you on the right track.

If you are anemic and would like to receive medical treatment without the use of blood transfusions, the Anemia Center can help. Our doctors can help diagnose the underlying cause of your anemia and recommend a treatment plan that is right for you.

For patients: No referrals are required if you have an existing diagnosis of anemia or iron deficiency. To schedule an appointment please call (845) 458-4000. Press 2 for scheduling, then press 2 for the Anemia Center.

For providers: If you would like to refer a patient to the Anemia Center, please fax a script to (845) 458-4420.

Bloodless Medicine – What it means?

For some patients, blood transfusion is never an option This can be due to medical, religious, or other personal reasons. As an example, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not accept blood transfusions, but they do seek quality medical care often called Bloodless Medicine.

Whether you have concerns about blood transfusion safety or prefer not to receive a blood transfusion for personal or religious reasons, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall respects your wishes.  In 2023, the Hospital, established a Patient Blood Management program. As part of the program development all staff were educated on patient choice to not received blood products and to ensure that blood products are only given when medically necessary,

In the Community the Medical Group, along with our partners throughout Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall, are committed to optimizing patients in the community so that their risk of needing a blood transfusion is mitigated.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) standards are aimed at treating the underlying causes of anemia, identifying, and treating coagulopathy (bleeding disorders), and utilizing surgical techniques to limit bleeding during surgery.

As we continue to grow our Bloodless Medicine & Patient Blood Management (PBM) program, we will partner with you to provide excellent care, keep you safe, and take care of your healthcare needs.
